Joel Schwartz had the good fortune at the age of seven to experience with his parents the wonders of Cape Breton, particularly the Margaree River Valley. He returned there many times with his wife and his sons, and eventually with his grandchildren.

Joel Schwartz is a retired professor of biology from the City University of New York. As a historian of the natural sciences during the Age of Exploration, he is well qualified to write about the natural world of Cape Breton. The reader will also be captivated by the charm of Cape Breton's friendly people and the revival of Gaelic and Acadian music and culture.
